Planned Giving

Habitat Legacy Society

We recognize the foresight of our thoughtful donors through membership in the Habitat Legacy Society, a group of individuals who have included our organization in their estate planning. Planned giving is a unique philanthropic tool in that it assists HFHCFC, while also advancing your own financial objectives.

In addition to personal satisfaction and the benefits to HFHCFC, planned gifts offer major financial planning opportunities to minimize federal and state taxes, increasing the possibilities for effective distribution of assets. The wide degree of flexibility permitted in arranging a gift plan while still obtaining favorable tax benefits contributes significantly to making such gifts effective and frequent estate-planning tools.

Benefits of a Bequest

Your will ensures that your assets are distributed, according to your wishes, to the people and institutions most important to you. Through a bequest, you can have the satisfaction of knowing that you will strengthen HFHCFC for years to come.

A charitable bequest is deductible for federal estate-tax purposes with no limit on the amount of the deduction. In addition, bequests generally are not subject to state inheritance or estate taxes. In a large estate, the savings can be more than the value of the bequest.

For Example

Bill, a Habitat volunteer, passed away in 2005 with an estate valued at $2.6 million. By including a $100,000 bequest to HFHCFC in his will, Bill reduced his taxable estate to $2.5 million and saved roughly $47,000 in estate taxes.

Bill’s gift of $100,000 to Habitat actually only cost his estate $53,000.

To the extent that you give any portion of your estate to charity, it reduces the value of your estate and, thus, reduces your estate tax. You can even eliminate all estate taxes by giving to charity the amount of your estate that would be subject to estate taxes – sometimes referred to as “zeroing-out” your estate tax.
