House Sponsorship

|
|
The objective
of House Sponsorship is to help alleviate sub-standard housing
by providing a house that is affordable to purchase for a
low-income family. |
Qualified families meet three criteria: the need for better
living conditions, the ability to pay the mortgage, and
willingness to volunteer 500 hours of sweat equity.
Typically, a house is built in six months. Private
donations fund the building materials, and volunteers provide
the labor. Sponsors may provide as many volunteers on site
as is feasible to their own organization.
|
|
The land for the house is usually donated by a city, such as
Bridgeport, or purchased by HFHCFC for a small fee.
$80,000 pays for the lumber and materials. $4200 pays for
a house in our "house for a house" program, for every house
built locally, we also build for our partner affiliate, the
Republic of the Congo. Therefore, a complete House
Sponsorship is $84,200.
A House Sponsorship is usually an exclusive sponsorship,
supplemented by in-kind donations such as the appliances and
foundation. During the duration of the build, a large sign
featuring the sponsoring organization's name will be posted
on-site.
Adding an affordable home to help alleviate the affordable
housing shortage will have a great impact on Coastal Fairfield
County. The homes we have built have not only revitalized
and stabilized neighborhoods, creating safer environments, but
perhaps more importantly, have created productive citizens who
have been given a hand-up rather than a hand-out.
For our homeowner partners, 23% have experienced improved
health, 35% saw an improvement in their children's grades, 58%
experienced less family conflict, and 68% had improved their
financial position considerably when they moved into their
habitat home.
